The Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski La Habana has been described as the urban center of gravity that unites Old Havana. Located in a block in itself, the Gran Hotel Manzana connects the four main streets of Neptuno, San Rafael, Zulueta and Montserrate and in front of the Calle Obispo entrance.
The building proves to be the gateway to the tourist and commercial heart of the city. The Gran Hotel Manzana Kempinski looks directly at the famous El Floridita cocktail bar, Hemingway's meeting place, surrounded by the main buildings of Old Havana, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the beautiful Art Deco Bacardi building and the Museo de Fine arts.
It has unbeatable views of the Capitol and the Great Theater of Havana, and in front of the Central Park and the statue of José Martí. The construction of the Manzana de Gómez (this is the original name of the building) began in 1890 and was taken over by its namesake Andrés Gómez Mena in 1894.
Manzana de Gómez was initially established as the first covered shopping center in Cuba, whose splendor could have been compared to the Galerie de la Fayette in Paris. Unfortunately, the many turbulent years that passed had their effect on the facade and interior of the building. After the Revolution, the building maintained its commercial uses while housing many government offices. The deterioration of the building resulted in the closure of the space and the eventual total renovation led by the Swiss luxury hotel group Kempinski.
